CNC Milled Paintings
These works are an outgrowth of the Machine Made drawings and the various other projects employing a CNC machine. The initial idea was informed by the origins of binary coding as an invention to drive looms for repeatable pattern creation in textiles. The process includes the glued lamination of multiple layers of fabric upon panel. A digital toolpath file is designed to cut a geometric pattern into the surface of each slab. Variation in the surface and material makeup is implicit, leading to inconsistencies and unexpected moments in the final painting. Variation in line quality, cut depth and frayed edges or completely lost sections of surface are unpredictable byproducts. The result is a unique unrepeatable composition from an ultra repeatable source. An object that sits between painting and relief sculpture.
